Each December we swear off of Fantasy Football for good, only to find by July we’re in full gridiron withdrawals. Nothing sounds better than endless humiliation in yet another losing season. New Year’s Eve is exactly the same. It comes around and we try to make last minute plans for the ultimate celebration. Only to be disappointed. Again and again.

So it goes with the summer movie season. Each year there’s renewed hope for a film worthy of knocking us flat on our asses. It is, after all, what the hype tells us to think. Sadly, it’s one of the primary reasons this blog exists; as each year we’re subjected to formulaic crap marketed as films. It is increasingly rare for movie fans to be genuinely rewarded for years of patience. But every now and then…

Anticipation ran high for this sequel; it had some big shoes to fill after Batman Begins. And simply put, The Dark Knight delivers! The Riddle of Steal has compiled a short Top Ten list of the marvelous achievement that is The Dark Knight, the best summer film in many, many years.

10. Two and half hours of incredible character development

(Enough with the shrink-wrapped 90-minute features-finally a running time that is worth our money.)

9. Commentary on our current dark times (do the ends justify the means…)

(Terrorist activity, Public surveillance, Good guy “torturing” the bad guy, Renditions in foreign lands. Starting to sound familiar?)

8. Hong Kong extraction - Sky Hook Baby!

7. Major character deaths

(Katie? Where did Katie go?)

6. Heath Ledger’s truly genius performance.

(As jaded as we typically are, we have to admit Ledger was clearly a true artist. Puts those other pretty faces to shame.)

5. The Bat-Pod - greatest vehicle surprise since ”shields”

4. Fantastic ensemble cast

(Ocean’s 11 this is not.)

3. Multiple, complete story arcs weaved into the central Batman vs. Joker theme

2. Eerie musical tones to heighten tension (a la Kubrick)

(You have to see and hear this to understand.)

AND….

1. Staggering use of Duality

Batman vs. Joker

Joker vs. Harvey Dent

Harvey Dent vs. Bruce Wayne

Citizens vs. Criminals

Society vs. Batman

and how could we forget Harvey Dent vs. Harvey Dent (Two Face is Duality incarnate)

Ultimately, The Riddle of Steal hesitates to consider when we’ll next have an opportunity to witness such greatness. We silently pray en masse for Terminator Salvation. Unless of course, you think we’re missing something…

Predator forever changed the way we processed an ‘action flick.’ It introduced a new dynamic that had not been seen previous: A special forces team, gritty jungle warfare, invisible lizard, shoulder mounted laser, dismemberment, mud cameo, a mythical chopper, hand to hand combat, bows and arrows, booby traps… and all of it boiling down to a glorified game of duck hunt.

What’s not to love?

A Science-Fiction threat to a realistic military force is nothing new, but the delivery of that story, the story of Dutch, Hawkins, Mac, Dillon and Blaine, the story of a random woman at the wrong place, at the wrong time, all of this, is just perfect harmony. This harmony serenades all lovers of action, suspense and science fiction films and what’s amazing is this is very much unlike rocket science. Start with great storytelling, blend in pioneering special effects and sprinkle a handful of iconic characters to complete the recipe for the secret sauce to great action films (The Empire Strikes Back ring a bell).

As is the driving force of this nascent blog, Saab and Tone considered how might Predator play itself out in game form?

Easy.

Flashbacks.

Imagine knowing how ‘Billy! Find me a way out of dis hole!’ came to possess such a keen tracking sense? Or how Dillon ended up “pushing too many pencils…”? In Predator: Get to the Chopper! (PGC), all these questions could be answered in early character game missions integrated into the original film’s story.

This is where it gets awesome. The gamer would be required to play the role of each and every character in the order in which they perish in the film. At the moment each character is dispatched by the Predator the game would suddenly thrust you into previous missions, maintaining your hold of each persona a bit longer as you explore an aspect of their earlier military career. You get to survive the days when Dutch & co. were all about being, “…a rescue team , not assassins…”

Where did the team learn to set a 360 degree claymore and pit trap?

Where did Dutch learn to build a tree/spike trap? Or a bow and arrow?!

Could Billy give guidance to Dutch from beyond the grave (kinda like when Obi pops in on Luke from time to time)?

Additionally, imagine the Predator’s AI given today’s PCs and next gen consoles; It will constantly adjust to your actions, monitor your weapon status, and avoid your traps, all the while hunting you like a dog. And time would never be on your side. 14 hours to find Harper’s men, 17 hours to find the rebel camp. You witness day transform to dark. You, the gamer, know what’s lurking. Check your gear, pay attention…..”I see you….”

Ultimately, we all know where this path will take us. The culmination of all lives (and deaths) will end in a mud suit, some “…boy-scout bullshit…” and a one-on-one with “the fucking lizard” himself.

This is the game true fans have been waiting for. Better still, it has the combination of gritty story and great gameplay that will attract new fans to the Predator saga. Imagine generations of Arnold fans, old and new, facing down the Predator and screaming, “GET TO THE CHOPPER!”

One question, what would everyone think of a hidden easter egg where you can play the original duck hunt but with as a former professional wrestler turned state governor who wields a mean gatling gun? And of course, in this version you could shoot the fucking dog too…

As the inaugural post for “The Riddle of Steal-The Blog” we thought it might be worthwhile to give the reader a brief look into the creation of this blog and its subsequent creative process.

Origins:

Two guys, best friends, born in the 70’s, raised on the classics: Star Wars, Superman, Raiders, Contra (you get the picture). We love our Texas home, but are currently enduring a generous layover in the PacNW. During our usual banter of all classic movies from the 1980’s (again, our formative years) we decided to discover what mysteries awaited at “RiddleOfSteel.com.” Surely, geeks the world round had inquired about this before, assuming some pioneering Gen Xer would have captured the domain years ago in order to pay homage to such greatness…

“Hither came Conan, The Cimmerian, black-haired, sullen-eyed, sword in hand, a thief, a reaver, a slayer, with gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth, to tread the jeweled thrones of the Earth under his sandaled feet.”

-Robert E. Howard, The Phoenix on the Sword, 1932.

What? Nothing? Really? After all this time has no one on Earth thought to lock this domain up?

Saab caught the malfunction. Instead of ‘The Riddle of Steel‘ Tone had typed, ‘Steal.’ All the better (you’ll soon understand why). Our blog was born.

Now this is not just any other blog. Many blogs participate in keeping readers informed on the ever-changing political landscape, while others strive to share the spotlight of Circus Hollywood. And still, other blogs lend their share to the discussions on everything from diets to a proper liberal wheat-free child-rearing camp in the Columbia River Gorge as witnessed here in the PacNW.

The Riddle of Steal transcends many of these thoughts and observations and serves to help us better understand our primary wounds in this early 21st century. The consistent shit shoveling by studios, their film makers and video game creators alike, focused on the sole purpose of stealing our minds, souls, and hard earned cash.

Was it some trick of fate that we ended up with the misnomer: ‘Steal?’

We think not…How many movies should have never been made? Shit-loads. Are there classic video games lost to the ages? No doubt. Do Tone, Saab, and the rest of fandom got better ideas? Unequivocally: Fuck Yes.

So here we have The Riddle of Steal. A blog for us and maybe for you…a blog that will give us solace when the cinema has lost its central AC, a blog that will keep us gaming far past ‘next-gen’ efforts. A blog that begs the question-what the fuck is going on out there in entertainment land!?

Enough with the test audiences, enough with the demos. The great will never be made. But The Riddle of Steal has arrived, to pave a new path and offer imagination to hopeful throughout the world, proudly proclaiming cool shit still exists. Problem is, it’s in the heads of these two Texans.

Coming Soon:

First Official Post: Best video game rated ‘M’ for mature audiences that will never be made:

Predator: Get to the Chopper!”
